In a year when warehouses have been dealing with COVID-19, lockdowns, and social distancing, we could all use a good news story. We definitely have one with Zebra wearable technologies and its HD4000 head-up display.

Zebra’s HD4000 Enterprise Head-Mounted Display and other wearable technologies are helping warehouse workers achieve new levels of productivity and efficiency at a crucial time. The idea behind all of these solutions is simple:

How do you come up with a faster and easier way for warehouse workers to access pick lists and item locations, and then pick each item and verify accuracy without spending hours of their day juggling devices and looking at a mobile device screen?

The constant need to look down at a mobile device and juggle mobile computers and barcode scanners consumes minutes and hours from every day in the warehouse, and it often causes neck strain and other ergonomic issues.

Zebra set out to solve this problem with the industry-first HD4000 head-mounted display. It’s a lightweight and see-through optical display that’s as easy to wear as a pair of glasses. It puts information in front of workers’ eyes without them having to look down at a device screen and without distracting them from the task at hand.

When it’s paired with Zebra’s RS6000 Bluetooth ring barcode scanner, HS3100 Bluetooth headset, and a TC5X Series touch mobile computer or WT6000 wearable mobile computer, the HD4000 allows workers to see order picking information in their real-time field of view and then pick and validate items with hands-free efficiency.

The head-up display provides visible information from an app running on a Zebra mobile computer. The headset provides voice-directed guidance, and the ring scanner handles barcode scanning. These devices work together to keep worker’s hands and eyes free to focus on picking and barcode scanning instead of having to juggle devices and physically interact with mobile apps.

The HD4000 weighs just 1.06 ounces (30 grams) and can be put on or taken off in a split second. It also provides unmatched color, contrast, and image clarity while minimizing eye fatigue with a focal distance optimized for head-mounted applications.

The HD4000 also includes a built-in 5 megapixel camera for image capture, plus a head tracker to improve human-computer interaction by monitoring the user’s head position and orientation. There’s also a built-in microphone for voice communications.

Zebra’s device is engineered for comfort, with a fully adjustable frame mount that fits practically any worker. It also accommodates left and right eye use, a wide range of inter-pupillary distance positioning, and even prescription glasses. You can change from right eye to left eye in seconds, so workers can avoid eye strain and enjoy a comfortable, all-day viewing experience.

The HD4000 connects to Zebra’s WT6000 or TC5X mobile computers through a simple USB cable and supports host device connectivity for Android (5.0 and higher) and Windows 10. It doesn’t require a battery since it draws power from the mobile computer, and since it uses less than one watt of power, there’s little impact on the host device battery. The HD4000 also uses the host device’s Wi-Fi or cellular radio via the USB 2.0 connection.
